MeeGo 1.02 for Netbooks update available

On Monday MeeGo made available the second update for the MeeGo 1.0 Core Software Platform and Netbook User Experience project release (the version of MeeGo designed to be run on netbooks). The updated version, 1.02, resolves several email and media player issues, updates syncevolution and connection manager and has more than 70 bug fixes. Read on for further details.

MeeGo for IVI (cars) 1.0 released

The first version of MeeGo for IVI (in vehicle information) systems has been released. Based on MeeGo 1.0, the Day 1 release of the MeeGo IVI UX includes a homescreen and taskbar for launching and managing applications, a sample navigation application, a version of the Fennec browser and various packages from open source automotive projects.

MeeGo Conference 2010 website goes live

The MeeGo Conference 2010 website is now live. The website is now accepting session proposals (speaking slots) and registration for the conference is expected to be available shortly. The first MeeGo Conference is scheduled to take place in Dublin (Ireland) at the Aviva Stadium between November 15th and 17th. It aims to bring together a technical audience (developers, OEMs, OSVs, and MeeGo project contributors) to learn about the current status of MeeGo and discuss future directions.

Vodafone announce Mobile Clicks innovation competition for 2010

Got a smart idea for something on mobile? Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2010 might be just the thing for you. This competition (with a prize fund of 150,000 Euros) is accepting registrations for the competition until August 22nd. They're looking for smart ideas, not just finished products, and are hoping to accelerate innovation in European mobile start-ups. More below....

openSUSE 11.3 includes start of MeeGo support

As part of its version 11.3 release, openSUSE now includes initial support for MeeGo, as part of a wider effort to improve support for netbook devices. It is based on the netbook user experience version of MeeGo. The effort has been led by the openSUSE Goblin team; according to the release notes MeeGo on openSUSE (code named Smeegol) adds additional multimedia (codecs, Amazon store) and social networking (Digg, Facebook, MySpace and Flickr) support. Qt Developer Network opens in beta

Last week Qt quietly rolled out the public beta its new developer website, Qt Developer Network, which aims to provide a one-stop portal for Qt developers and consolidate resources that were previously spread across the main Qt website. It also provides a more vendor neutral destination for developers than Forum Nokia, something that could be important in helping drive adoption of the Symbian and MeeGo platforms by manufacturers other than Nokia.

Forum Nokia Projects - online project hosting

Forum Nokia recently took the covers of Forum Nokia Projects (, a free service providing online project hosting for collaborative software development, documentation, or any other project. The service is built on top of the open source Trac software and is fully integrated with Forum Nokia. The service includes the usual tools such as source-code browser, wiki, forums, tickets and support for three version control systems (SVN, Git, and Mercurial).

MeeGo 1.01 for Netbooks update now available

Last Thursday MeeGo announced the first update for the MeeGo 1.0 Core Software Platform and Netbook User Experience project release (the version of MeeGo designed to be run on netbooks). Nokia fights back with new developer offerings

Nokia has made a number of developer announcements today, which significantly strengthen their developer services and offerings. Perhaps most interesting is news of a public beta service that allows developers to get their content Symbian Signed at no cost (compared to a previous first time signing cost of up to $215). Also important is the news that individuals can now register as Ovi Publishers (previously restricted to companies) and that the Ovi Store is now accepting Qt-based applications. Finally, and the most significant in the long term, is the first full release of the Nokia Qt SDK 1.0 and the accompanying Nokia Smart Installer (previously in beta). Video: NRC demo - Nokia Image Space mobile client

As part of Nokia's 'Open for Ideas' event, I had the opportunity to attend the Tampere Innovation Experience @ Demola day, which included a showcase more than 40 research projects that had been guided by open innovation principles. I teamed up with The Really Mobile Project's Ben Smith to shoot three videos of NRC (Nokia Research Centre) demos. The first video covers the Nokia Image Space research, with a demo of the Image Space mobile client on a Nokia N900.
