Intel AppUp Application Lab: MeeGo series events
In July and August Intel will be holding a series of Intel AppUp Application Lab events, aimed at developers, in a number of cities around the world (Munich, London, Pune, Delhi, New York, Berlin, and Cologne). Topics covered include the benefits of the Intel AppUp developer program and an introduction to developing for MeeGo. The events are free to attend, but you will need to register to guarantee a place as the number of available seats is limited.
Acer Iconia M500 - MeeGo tablet shown at Computex
Earlier today, at the Computex trade-show, Acer unveiled the Iconia M500, a tablet running on MeeGo. It has 10 inch screen, with a resolution of 1280 x 800, and runs on an Intel Atom processor (Moorestown). The device is running a custom UI, which is described as 'snackable', on top of MeeGo 1.2. Acer expect to release the M500 to the market by the end of the year, but have not disclosed pricing details.
MeeGo Conference keynote highlights time to market advantage
The opening keynote at the MeeGo Conference highlighted MeeGo's time to market advantage. Guest speakers from Nissan (IVI), 4tiitoo (Tablet) and Amino (TV) all noted that they had chosen MeeGo because it was open source and because it gave them a time to market advantage. However, with the exception of MeeGo 1.2 integration updates, concrete news announcements were thin on the ground, reflecting MeeGo's continuing position as a platform with future potential.
MeeGo Conference Spring 2011 starts today
The MeeGo Conference Spring 2011 gets underway today; it's being held in downtown San Francisco at the Hyatt Hotel from May 23rd to May 25th. The conference includes speaker sessions, expo areas, networking spaces and a hackers lounge. The conference is expected to help outline the future direction and shape of the MeeGo project. In addition, it offers device manufacturers and MeeGo project contributors a stage to talk about and show case their offerings.
MeeGo 2011 Spring Conference registration opens
Registration for the MeeGo 2011 Spring Conference, which is being held in San Francisco on May 23rd, 24th and 25th, opened last week. The conference is expected to have a greater industry focus than previous events and will likely showcase some of the first commercial MeeGo products. The conference organisers have also recently issued a call for sessions proposals for those wishing to speak at the event.
Nokia's new strategy and structure, Symbian to be a "franchise platform", MeeGo still in long term plans
At its Strategy and Financial Briefing event today in London, Nokia has outlined its "new strategic direction, including changes in leadership and operational structure to accelerate the company's speed of execution in a dynamic competitive environment". Some more quotes below, but in short this means a reorganisation into "Smart Devices" and "Mobile Phones", and adding a new OS platform to its portfolio, with Windows Phone becoming Nokia's "primary smartphone platform" and Symbian becoming "a franchise platform, leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value". Live: Nokia Strategy and Financial Briefing
At a Strategy and Financial Briefing, which takes place at 10 am GMT on February 11th Nokia's CEO, Stephen Elop, is expected to outline his vision for the future strategy of the company. Marko Ahtisaari at LeWeb 2010
Marko Ahtisaari, SVP of industrial design at Nokia, was one of the guest speakers at this year's LeWeb Conference. He covered topics from dominant designs of smartphone user interface and collective intelligence with mobile devices. He outlined why he sees that there's plenty of work to be done in the world of mobile user experience, particularly in having mobile devices actually demand less of our attention. In his view, iOS is "beautifully elegant and fantastically constrained", while Symbian and Android actually share the same design pattern but differ greatly in their business models. MeeGo Conference 2010 around the Web
The first MeeGo conference was held last week, in Dublin. This event was the first chance for students, developers, and people from the industry to get together and discuss advancing the platform. Our very own Rafe Blandord was there covering the event, and will be reporting on his experiences.
