Qt showcase for N9

The Nokia Developers blog has announced a range of demonstration applications showcasing what can be achieved with Qt on the N9. There are fourteen applications to download, along with their source code for developers to learn how each was built. Many of the applications demonstrate how to utilise hardware interfaces. For example, the guitar tuner shows how to address the audio API, the compass application interfaces with the N9's magnetometer, and several games show how to interface with the accelerometer, all in Qt, Qt Quick and Qt Mobility. NuevaSync improves multiple calendar support

NuevaSync is a paid-for Mail for Exchange service tailored to help all kinds of mobile devices synchronise successfully with Google’s PIM services. We reviewed NuevaSync last year, and found it to be a great help with getting Nokia devices to work painlessly with the Google cloud. Nokia N9 Screenshots

Qt Creator 2.2.1 released with MeeGo Harmattan support

The Qt Labs Developer Blog has just announced an update to the Qt SDK. In a case of good timing, the Qt team have released Qt Creator 2.2.1, which is mainly a bug fix release, at the same time as integrating support for MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan. Support for MeeGo Harmattan comes on the day that the N9 was announced at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore. Read on for more details.

Linpus updates its MeeGo products to 1.2

Linous has announced that it will upgrade both its MeeGo based netbook and tablet operating systems to the MeeGo 1.2 release. The Linpus MeeGo netbook and tablet editions have a user experience built by Linpus running on top of the common MeeGo code and UI building blocks. They are licensened by OEMs (Fujitsu, Lenovo and Acer) who build and ship the device products.

MeeGo 1.2 release now available

The MeeGo project today announced the availability of the MeeGo 1.2 release. This release is intended to provide a solid base line from which device vendors and developers can start creating software for a range of device categories. In this sense it can be seen as the first mature release of the core platform. Also available today is version 1.2 of the MeeGo SDK and the first MeeGo tablet developer preview release (Tablet UX).

Nokia to cut 4,000 jobs as impact of new strategy bites

Nokia today announced that it plans to cut its workforce by 4,000 employees by the end of 2012, as part of the restructuring resulting from its recent strategy changes. The majority of the cuts will take place in Finland, Denmark and the UK. They are part of the previously announced measures to cut Nokia's operational expenditure by €1 billion. In addition, a further 3,000 employees will move to Accenture as part of the transfer of Nokia's Symbian software activities, which was also announced today.

Opera Mobile 11 and Mini 6 officially released

Opera has announced the new versions of its mobile browsers, Opera Mobile 11 and Opera Mini 6. These bring an updated user interface, improved text wrapping, and most significantly, multi-touch zoom. Overall performance is improved too, with native handling of heavy sites appearing to load faster in Opera Mobile 11 than with Opera Mobile 10. Read on for more about the update.

Linpus demos MeeGo based tablet solution at CeBIT

Linpus, a provider of open source operating system solutions, demoed its MeeGo based tablet solution at CeBIT last week. Linpus have created a ready-to-go tablet solution, based around MeeGo, with a custom user interface and application suite. The solution is aimed at OEMs and ODMs who are looking to get a tablet product into the market as easily and as quickly as possible.

Sebastian Nyström - Nokia's new Head of MeeGo, Qt and WebKit

Sebastian Nyström has been appointed as Nokia's head of MeeGo, Qt and WebKit, according to a blog post on the MeeGo website by Peter Schneider, Head of MeeGo Marketing at Nokia. In the last few years Nyström has been responsible for leading Nokia's Qt efforts and has been an eloquent spokesman for the open source framework. His new job gives him responsibility for MeeGo and WebKit activities at Nokia, in addition to his existing responsibilities for Qt.
