Nokia N900 PR 1.2 update incoming

Published by Rafe Blandford at 7:36 UTC, May 25th 2010

The Nokia N900's second major software update, PR 1.2 (10.2010.19-1), will become available in the next 24 hours. The UK release should be available today, with the global release following tomorrow (26th May). The update brings support for event invites in email, Facebook chat, video calling, portrait browsing, an updated version of Ovi Maps, Qt 4.6 support, updated application menu UI, and much more.

The update will be delivered over the air via App Manager. It should also be possible to flash your N900 with the USB cable using an image file. However this method will delete all application and settings from the device.

PR 1.2 will also allow a greater number of commercial application to be released for the N900. An updated Ovi Store will debut this week with new games (Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Kroll) and applications (Sygic, Weatherbug, Documents to Go).

Nokia Conversations is reporting on the update and notes that the N900 will not receive a commercial MeeGo software release, but the core Maemo software will continue to be supported.

"Although Nokia N900 devices are being used for platform development and testing purposes by those involved in the MeeGo project, we don’t have plans for a full scale commercial MeeGo upgrade on the Nokia N900. The reason? It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device.  Nokia realises this news may be a disappointment for some, rest assured that Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo software on your Nokia N900, as evidenced by the PR 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) update available today."

It is worth pointing out that this applies only to a commercial release from Nokia. It seems likely that a community led release of MeeGo for the N900 will become available, perhaps based on the developer and testing version that will be released as MeeGo evolves.

We'll bring you a more detailed summary once we have had the opportunity to update to the new software release.
