DeviceVM today announced its plans to deliver Splashtop MeeGo Remix, which it describes as "an enhanced version of the award-winning Splashtop instant-on software platform". The new product, which is built on top of MeeGo 1.0, will give Splashtop greater functionality and enable support for developers to add third party applications. It means that in the future many of the laptops and PCs with an instant on feature could have that functionality enabled by MeeGo.

Splashtop is intended to be shipped with hardware (e.g. motherboards and other products); it provides a near-instant-on capability for users to carry out basic tasks (web browsing, media playback, Skype calls). It is usually provided as an addition to a normal operating system installation and marketed as a way to use a devices basic functionality, without having to go trough a full boot process. It is currently used by in a variety of netbooks, laptops and PCs by manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, and Sony.

Splashtop MeeGo remix is intended to be an evolution of the existing product, providing greater functionality and an enhanced user experience. Tying in with MeeGo's multi-category aspirations DeviceVM clearly hopes that Splashtop MeeGo Remix will extends it reach into the non-PC space - from smartphones, to TVs and in automotive infotainment systems.

Here's a description from DeviceVM's press release:

Splashtop MeeGo Remix offers the same core benefits that have made Splashtop the world’s most popular instant-on platform among leading PC OEMs and end users alike: seconds to boot, a highly customizable interface and a robust security model. In addition to instant access to the preloaded native applications and one-click access to popular web apps, third-party applications now can be developed for Splashtop. Not only is this good for developers but it is great for end-users.

DeviceVM is demoing Splashtop MeeGo Remix running on various devices at Computex, and it is now available for evaluation by PC OEM partners starting from today. DeviceVM expects new products featuring Splashtop MeeGo Remix to ship in Q4 2010.

The potential reach of DeviceVM is significant. Thanks to its wide range of partner agreements DeviceVM could potentially take Splashtop MeeGo Remix to a broad audience and one that might not otherwise be aware or use MeeGo based products.

"We are excited that DeviceVM has embraced the MeeGo platform and believe that Splashtop MeeGo Remix will accelerate the growth of an application developer ecosystem behind MeeGo," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of Linux Foundation. "With its broad base of OEM customers, DeviceVM is well positioned to help build excitement for this new platform. By working closely with DeviceVM, we aim to advance the adoption of Linux across hundreds of millions of new devices in the coming years."
