openSUSE 11.3 includes start of MeeGo support

As part of its version 11.3 release, openSUSE now includes initial support for MeeGo, as part of a wider effort to improve support for netbook devices. It is based on the netbook user experience version of MeeGo. The effort has been led by the openSUSE Goblin team; according to the release notes MeeGo on openSUSE (code named Smeegol) adds additional multimedia (codecs, Amazon store) and social networking (Digg, Facebook, MySpace and Flickr) support. Read on for further details.

Although initial support for MeeGo is now included in openSUSE 11.3, a fully working version is not yet available. The latest status update on openSUSE Goblin team mailing list notes that there a couple of issues still to be resolved. A ISO image is available, which can be used to install MeeGo on openSUSE as things stand and the see the aforementioned issues for yourself. The image will be updated in the future as work progresses on MeeGo on openSUSE.

It is important to note that there is a distinction between the work to include MeeGo in openSUSE (Smeegol) and SUSE MeeGo. SUSE MeeGo, which we first wrote about, when it was first announced, earlier this year, is a Novell distribution aimed primarily at OEM device manufacturers. Novell say that SUSE MeeGo will be pre-installed on a variety of devices from different OEMs over the next 12 months.

However the two projects are related and will presumably have a similar relationship as openSUSE has with Novell's commercial SUSE Linux Enterprise distributions.

As a starting point for exploring the MeeGo on openSUSE we would recommend the Goblin team page.

As an illustration of what we can expect to see in SUSE based MeeGo distributions here is a video from Novell illustrating the future shape of SUSE MeeGo. The video was first published around the Computex trade show.
