Major update to cuteTube, adds Vimeo and cross-service searching

Available today is a major update, v1.7.3, to one of the biggest applications in the Symbian (and Meego) worlds - cuteTube, the YouTube (and other video services) client. The full changelogs are listed below, but the highlights are full support for Vimeo, a new 'quick search' box, and a truck load of performance improvements and fixes.

Direct from the developer, here are the changelogs for v1.7.3 on each platform from v1.5.x (though I only show screens below for the Symbian implementation):

cuteTube for Harmattan changelog:

* Full Vimeo support.
* New 'quick search' box.
* Additional 'simple' video player.
* Splash screen now changes according to current application theme.
* HD Dailymotion video downloads restored.
* Concurrent transfers (maximum of 3).
* Font changes to improve readability.
* Fixed possible duplicate entries in subscriptions.
* Fixed error in retrieving some YouTube user profiles.

cuteTube for Symbian changelog:

* Full Vimeo support.
* New 'quick search' box.
* HD Dailymotion video downloads restored.
* Concurrent transfers (maximum of 3).
* Improved download performance.
* Font changes to improve readability.
* Video sharing updated to comply with Twitter/Facebook API changes.
* Fixed possible duplicate entries in subscriptions.
* Fixed error in retrieving some YouTube user profiles.

Being something of a cuteTube fan, I headed straight in on my Nokia 808 to play with v1.7.3. Do note that, in each case, the account handling system had to be changed to comply with YouTube authorisation changes and that you'll have to re-enter your account information with each video service.

Note the new (cross platform) 'quick search' box at the top of the main menu; (right) setting up accounts, starting with my Vimeo one, with support new to cuteTube for this version...

Going through the usual OAuth login procedure, this time for the (not very mobile-friendly) Vimeo...

Quick search checks all video services where you have set up accounts, but you can restrict a search to just one using the dedicated Search function and its options; (right) cross-site search matches

and you can then tap through to see video details, comments, and more, plus play the video of course - rotating the phone to landscape plays all videos full-screen, as you'd expect

Search options, letting you customise the main Search function (doesn't affect 'quick search', apart from the 'Safe search' toggle, of course); (right) setting the number of downloads that can be happening at once. If connected via wi-fi, then you're good to go with '3', though you won't necessarily get the video any faster, it just means that up to three videos can be downloading at the same time, sharing the same bandwidth.

Terrific stuff. cuteTube, despite the limitations of an nHD screen and the limited processors on many Symbian handsets, is still very comparable to YouTube, Vimeo and Daily Motion clients on other platforms. In fact, in many ways, it's for video as Gravity is for social, integrating multiple services into the one experience.

You can buy cuteTube for £3 from the Nokia Store on both modern Symbian devices and the Meego-powered Nokia N9.
